Abstract
Packaging Materials of agricultural products, especially potatoes, vary according to their types, characteristics, and nature of the product. Therefore, choosing the appropriate materials saves product from damage and loss, and many materials have been developed in this field using biopolymer to enhance the preservation of the product and the environment.
Research problem: lack of functional performance of some packaging materials used for potato and hence the research importance is to improve this performance, and to enhance the ability of competitive packaging in markets.
The research comprises requirements of product, biopolymers, and its use in treating the materials under study. Therefore, the research study aims to evaluate the functional performance of potato packaging materials and improve this performance through treatment with biopolymers and determining the best fit for the product requirements.
Methodology: The study followed the experimental approach to determine the extent to which the materials achieved the lowest loss percentage in samples properties under examination, packages samples and treatment layer were prepared (chitosan and starch mixture), then the packages were treated, then the product was packed inside the treated packages, and the study relied on measuring the properties of the product and extent of its impact during the storage period, then evaluating results.
Findings: effectiveness of usage biopolymer (chitosan) in the treatment of potato packaging materials, and extending its shelf life during preservation and storage, which resulted in the jute and Kraft paper materials achieving the lowest loss percentages in the properties of samples under examination.
