A Design Management Methodology through Design Thinking for Developing Smart Product System Design
Industrial Design Department, Faculty of Applied Arts, Beni-Suef University, Egypt.
Abstract
Industrial design as a profession has begun to expand its scope in business practices, especially with recent developments in design management and design thinking as well as technology. However, industrial design curricula remain traditional and focus mainly on product design. In fact, design management and design thinking go beyond the concept of product design and expand design to develop business strategies, design innovation and design services by putting people and their needs at the center. In addition, the technological transformation - post-industry 4.0 - has enabled it devices to be adapted into systems, products and services, and made smart and unified. To keep up with these typical changes and prepare our students for a rapidly changing business environment, the Design Smart Product System (Smart-PSD) design project has been proposed with second graders - Beni Suef University for 2021-2022. The research presents three student projects such as smart-PSDs case studies designed in three stages (Smart System Design, Product Design and Interface Design “UI”). Students gained a more holistic approach to design management by recognizing the smart product systems design process as well as their understanding of new industrial design expansions, and its transformative role for companies, industry and entrepreneurship based on technological innovation.
